Sleep Tight

Your bed is arguably the most important piece of furniture in your house. You spend 7-8 hours (even more if you're lucky/a student) in it everyday and it's the focus of your bedroom. With all this importance resting on it's metaphorical shoulders, it's down to you to do it with justice with the array of bed linens and accessories out there. I love buying new duvet covers as my uni room has cream walls and plain furniture so my bed acts as a blank canvas for the whole room.
When I make the decision to buy a new duvet, my first point of call is Next. They always have a great selection and are not too pricey considering how good quality the fabrics always are.
My favourite set in store right now is this Coral Roses Print Bed Set. I love a bold floral print and this one is also reversible so you get 2 for the price of 1!

As anyone who has ever been in my room will tell you, I also have a big thing for cushions. Big, small, square, round, fluffy, embroidered; you name it I've got it/lusted after it. Next also make some beautiful cushions and I have got my sights set on this embroidered one to add to my collection.

This cute set of his and hers pillowcases also caught my eye...

Sweet dreams :)

Last Night

Last night was my first night out for about three weeks and the mark the oh-so-special occasion a new outfit was in order! It's sale time on the high street at the moment and I managed to pick up a total bargain in the form of a black peplum top from New Look for a steal at £8! It is great quality and a good fit for such a cheap price tag and can definitely see myself wearing it on more than one more occasion! It could be smartened up for job interviews or the office with some tapered trousers but for last night I decided on a simple black skirt from Miss Selfridge and a light pink, cameo necklace from Accessorize.

I am also planning on teaming it with these fantastic leather side panel leggings from online store The Fashion Bible. I have wanted a pair like this for ages and at £13.99 they will create an extremely inexpensive outfit, perfect for my student bank balance!

The Emmy Awards 2012

The stars of the small screen flocked to the Nokia Theatre in downtown L.A on Sunday for The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As always, the competition for the best dressed was on!
Yellow proved a popular choice with Julianne Moore wearing Christian Dior Couture, Modern Family star Julie Bowen wearing Monique Lhuillier, Clare Danes wearing Lanvin and New Girl actress Hannah Simone in a custom-made Emilio Pucci, all braving to step out in the colour of Spring/Summer 2013 (if the latest catwalks are anything to go by).

Nicole Kidman, not one to be out-shone, wore a floor-length, sequin detail Antonio Beradi gown straight off the LFW catwalk just a couple of days before the ceremony itself!

Nicole takes my award for Best Dressed. I love the aqua colours and the intricacy of the detailing.

Dresses with a fishtail silhouette also seemed to be a red carpet trend this year.

And not forgetting the men of course....

Homeland picked up several awards on the night, including Best Male Lead and Best Female Lead as well as Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

London Fashion Weekend 2012

Today, my friend and I descended on Somerset House for London Fashion Weekend. The weather was great, if not a little bit chilly, and although I'm too poor to even pick up some of the amazing bargains they were offering, I had a great time! Here are some of my photo's from the day...

(that's me btw)

Anyone else go to LFW?

Back to Basics

I recently purchased myself a grey, oversized jersey top from good old Topshop; well, technically, I exchanged something I didn't want but that's not quite as concise, and have been re-introduced to the beauty of the basic. Every high street store, and high end designer for that matter, has some form of 'basic', whether it's simple t-shirts, plain dresses or classic coats. They may seem boring on the hanger but they provide a blank canvas for creating an infinite number of outfits and, in most cases, they are a total bargain!

For example, above is the jersey top I have and am in fact wearing right now! It is just as good for lazy days around the house as it is for a girly shopping trip and all it takes is some great accessories!

Dinosaur Necklace - Tatty Devine

This amazing necklace from quirky jewellery brand, Tatty Devine, is perfect for layering onto any kind of basic as it will definitely get all the attention!

Jersey dresses are also a great way to get a new outfit for a night out without breaking the bank! You can style it up with accessories you already own to give them a new lease of life and still get that great feeling of wearing new clothes!

By far the kings and queens of basics, American Apparel have made their name by offering cuts and colours of every basic you could possibly think of!

I rest my case.

They may not be the most exciting things you buy this autumn but you can't deny their flexibility, versatility and price tag is all rather appealing....

Uniquely Does It

Topshop are fast establishing themselves as a design force to be reckoned with, in the form of their ready-to-wear line; Topshop Unique. Turning high street into high end and the Topshop girl into the Topshop woman, the brand has gathered a cult following of celebrities and industry professionals alike. Their latest collection for Spring/Summer 2013 was awash with sheer fabrics arty prints and graphic lines all wrapped up in clean yet relaxed silhouettes.

My personal favourites of the collection are the effortlessly chic looks below. Navy blue adds elegance, the satin sheen oozes sophistication and the geometric shapes and cut out detail keep it young and fresh; perfect for spring.

Check out the full show video right here...

Topshop's show space not only plays host to their own work but to the shows of several up-and-coming designers in partnership with NEWGEN and Fashion East. This year the likes of Peter Pilotto, Louise Grey and J.W. Anderson all graced the oval catwalk and put their own stamp on the space.

Peter Pilotto brought prints-a-plenty, mixing monochrome with Aztec, geometric and abstract.

Louise Gray brought her usual playfulness and colour clashing along with an unusual sponsor; Barbie!

Michael Van Der Ham also brought the colour with his beautiful mis-matching and ladylike prints.

If you missed any of the action at the Topshop Showspace, catch it all here!

Come Rain Or Shine

The Trench Coat. Firstly developed during the First World War for British and French soldiers and used as a lightweight alternative to the previous heavier 'greatcoats'. The invention of the trench coat has been claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum dating back to the 1850's.
Nowadays, the trench coat is a staple for the working woman (and man for that matter), as well as a casual alternative to a jacket in the summer evenings and autumn days. The design of the trench coat has pretty much remain constant throughout the ages and the designers that take them on, but as everyone knows, it's the details that make it.

Here are some of my favourite ones out there right now...

If you're looking for durable and flexible basics, Gap is a great go-to. This trench coat is exactly as described; classic.

Trench Coat - JW Anderson for Topshop

So this one isn't technically available yet, but it is hotly anticipated and come the 14th September I will definitely be making more than one trip to my local Topshop to admire it!

Another place to pick up a great basic, is Uniqlo. A twist on the trench coats above and perfect for anyone worried about wearing light fabric as outerwear, this black belted coat has a great military feel - perfect for AW12-13.

You really can't beat the original, and you don't get any closer than one of the brands that started the whole trend; Burberry. Check out their website for more trench coat choices than you can shake a stick at!
